Ajuna's Penance, from the seventh century, in Mahabalipuram, India
This is Ajuna’s Penance in Mahabalipuram, India. It is a massive relief sculpture carved out of tan stone. At the right side of the photo is a huge elephant. Surrounding the elephant are dozens of figures in all sorts of poses. Some kneel; others leap and run; some sit or stand quietly; and yet others have their hands upraised. Interspersed among them are a few animals, most of whom kneel. Underneath the large elephant is a smaller one. In the middle of the carving, there is a depiction of a small building.
